Janet M. Koenig, 94, of Botkins, passed away at 6:29 a.m., Saturday September 2, 2017 at her residence surrounded by her family.

She was born in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, on December 5, 1922 to John J. & Margaret F. (Crawford) McDermott who preceded her in death. On March 7, 1944 she married Emerson P. Koenig and he passed on March 28, 1991.

Survivors include 11 children; Ray Koenig, Kaye (Jack) Eshelman, Ken (Violet) Koenig, JoAnn Koenig, Jack (Chris) Koenig, Jill (Geof) Wilt, Greg (Martha) Koenig, Faye (Dan) Anderson, Claire (Randy) Counts, Rex Koenig, Ross (Betsy) Koenig, 30 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters, an infant daughter, 2 grandchildren Ilie Wilt, Carmen Koenig and a daughter-in-law Louise Koenig.

Mr. and Mrs. Koenig were married in Australia while Emerson was assigned to the Pacific theater during World War II. Mrs. Koenig came to America in 1945 after her husband was wounded in the Battle of Biak and sent back to the U.S. for medical treatment. She willingly adopted the German ways of her new community and became a United States citizen in 1957. Her passions were family, flowers and music. She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she served as choir member and director for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Koenig were lifelong and active members of the American Red Cross. They made several trips to Australia to visit Mrs. Koenig's family.

In 1991, Mr. Koenig died in the Australian town of Gladstone where they met and married. In completing the circle, Mrs. Koenig passed away in the same home and room in which her husband was born.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday September 8, 2017 at The Palazzo, Botkins. The family asks that any memorials be directed to the American Red Cross or to Wilson Health Hospice Care.

The family has entrusted Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Wapakoneta to handle the arrangements.
