Dennis R. Vernon, 71, of Wapakoneta, passed away at 3:52 a.m., Sunday, March 1, 2026 at Lima Memorial Health System, after a short battle with cancer.

He was born on July 8, 1954 in Logan County to Earl and Mary (Doty) Vernon who preceded him in death. On June 6, 1981 he married Beverly L. (Gill) Vernon who survives in Wapakoneta.

Survivors also include 2 children Brian (Amber) Vernon of Wapakoneta, Lindsay (Ben) Stachowicz of NC; 4 grandchildren Madilyn and Kaleb Vernon, Payton and Hailey Stachowicz; a sister Mary Ann (Pastora) Vernon, a sister-in-law Cathy Vernon and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by 3 brothers Donald, Earl Jr. and Jack Vernon.

Following graduation, Dennis honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1977 where he served as a military police officer during the Vietnam War, an experience that laid the foundation for his dedicated career in public service.

Upon returning home, Dennis had worked at the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) before beginning his professional journey with becoming a valued member of the Wapakoneta Police Department where he served with distinction as a patrolman and K-9 handler for 16 years. After his retirement from the police department, Dennis obtained his basic EMS certification and continued to serve the citizens of Wapakoneta through his volunteering at the Wapakoneta EMS. He also continued to serve at the Auglaize County Sheriff's Office as a corrections officer for 16 years. His dedication to helping others extended beyond his official duties, as he also provided transportation for veterans through the Auglaize County Veterans Services Administration for 4 years.

Dennis enjoyed camping, fishing, wood carving, riding his bicycle, and playing poker with his friends. One of his many cherished roles was that of being a "Band Dad," supporting both of his children during their high school years. He also deeply cherished spending time with his family and grandchildren. He loved to attend all of their sporting events and concerts. Dennis was an active member of the Auglaize County Fraternal Order of Police and a member of Wapak First Church.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 6, 2026 at Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Josh Tissot officiating along with military rites which will be performed by the V.F.W. Post 8445 following the service. Family and friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
