James A. "Jim" Carter, 76, of Wapakoneta, passed away the morning of Monday, September 7, 2026 at Lima Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 24, 1950, in the World's End, Chelsea, London, England to William & Violet (Hughes) Carter, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his longtime partner, Barbara Teglas; her sons, James (Kelly) Teglas and Tim (Merit) Teglas and their families; daughter, Callie (Tyler) Ford; brothers, David, Bill, Keith (Christine), and Robin (Helen) Carter; sisters, Janet (Jim) McCreadie and Pat (John) Clare; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends.
Jim was also preceded in death by sisters, Susan Webber and Kathleen Stannard; brothers, Billy Carter and Jack Carter; sister-in-law, Kathleen "Kath" Carter; and brother-in-law, Douglas "Doug" Stannard.
Growing up, he loved playing football in the World's End with his brothers and friends. He remained an avid fan throughout his life never missing a Chelsea game if he could help it ... "Blue is the Colour!" Jim became quite the jokester early in life and was cracking jokes up until the very end. He never turned down a game of euchre-or the chance to proudly proclaim his victory.
Jim's love of adventure was evident in his willingness to pick up and travel. He fell in love with the United States after making his first trip in 1976 which was, coincidentally, when his namesake, President Jimmy Carter was in office. Joining the masonry trade, Jim worked as a tuckpointer for many years, until he was injured. Many buildings in Wapakoneta, including most of the churches downtown, have been touched by Jim's skilled hands.
As much as the United States was his home, he loved nothing more than returning to his old stomping grounds in London, visiting family and often ending up at the Goose, catching up over a couple of pints. Jim was extremely generous - always willing to help anyone, even strangers, who were in need. He made friends anywhere he went and his friends could always rely on him. Above all he cared deeply for his family and friends, his truest treasure was spending time with those he cherished most in life.
Jim will be cremated according to his wishes. Following his diagnosis last year, Jim chose to celebrate his life then, surrounded by family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
He will be dearly missed but forever remembered by all who knew him. His adventurous spirit will live on in those who loved him most.
